Two thumbs up for the new Marilyn Monroe Movie. My Week With Marilyn transports you to the clean and crispy late 1950's England when Marilyn Monroe, still eager to prove herself as a serious actor, takes the challenge of staring in a movie opposite, and directed by, Lawrence Olivier, considered today and then as one of the best actors of all time. While filming, Marilyn's moods, insecurities and brave individuality result in an innocent friendship, almost affair, with one of the sets most liked and trusted Production Assistants. Michele Williams brings it all and so much more. She made me feel deeply in love with the person trapped inside Marilyn Monroe, Norma Jeane Baker, at the hight of her influence and fame. Kenneth Branagh is amazing as Lawrence Olivier. The contentious relationship between them portrayed to a T so that when their common artistic and empathetic hearts connect with mutual admiration for one another one can feel the gravitas of these two titans working together. Olivier realizing the truth in his power, that the eternal youth he seeking was not in the undeniable force of Marilyn's super nova but on the London stage, which had always been his true home. Marilyn survives her own fears and insecurities realizing that no matter the caliber of actor she is up against, no one could overshadow the very real secret talent that she had despite herself. And the friendship sparked between her and a lowly yet charming production assistant is seeped with a sweat innocent reality that chimed close to my heart. Bravo to the British cast and crew. A truely great human movie.
